    WMU - MGRRE’s K-12 Outreach Program

The scientists and staff of WMU Geosciences Department’s Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education (we just call it MGRRE or magree!) are anxious to share our resources with teachers, students and parents.

Our mission is to increase awareness and understanding of the earth, its processes and its natural resources.  Our program was initiated in 2007 with financial support from the U.S. Department of Energy and continues in 2008 with a generous grant from DTE Energy Foundation.

Our website is currently under construction, so please check back often for new resources.

    What We Do

We invite you to view our slide show  to learn more about what we do.  You can also download and print our brochure and Core Kids Flyer.

Our scientists, staff and graduate students visit classrooms in SW Michigan.  You can see photos from some of our visits here.  Our facility is open for field trips for groups of up to 25 and for teachers to visit and browse our resources.  We also hold teacher workshops in our classroom facility.  Follow the link to find out more.

    Letter to Teachers

If you are a teacher, please read our letter to educators to learn how we can work together to bring earth science alive for your students.  Feel free to download and print the letter and pass it along to your colleagues.

    What is MGRRE?

MGRRE, or the Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education, holds the largest collection of geological samples and data in the state.  Our rock collection is ENORMOUS! Take a look.

Here are some of the resources we have begun developing for classroom use.

    • Rocks Have Holes!  This presentation was prepared for a community outreach meeting of the MRCSP (Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership) during the summer of 2007.  The demonstration is available for use in classrooms in SW Michigan and eventually in other parts of Michigan.
    • A Beach Is A Beach Or Is It?  Have your students been to the beach?  Do they remember what the sand looked like?  Do they know why geologists might study sand?  Take a look at our “Sands of the World” display and some of the informative presentations our students have been working on.
    • Annotated list of books available for use at MGRRE
    • Favorite Links!  Be sure to come back and check this link soon.
