  • Mission Statement

The Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education (MGRRE), at Western Michigan University, facilitates basic and applied geological research, trains students for geoscience careers and promotes educational outreach. Although primarily focused on Michigan's energy, natural resources and the environment, MGRRE's activities also relate to general geology, fossil fuel energy resources, water resources and environmental issues.
Educational aspects of natural resources utilization and management are addressed at the K-16, post-graduate, professional and general public levels, with a primary focus on the State of Michigan, but encompass a national and international sphere of interest.
MGRRE is committed to preserving, researching and using for educational purposes collections of cores, samples and data that are maintained at its facility. These materials are the largest and most diverse collections of Michigan subsurface geological samples and data.

    Our Goals

  • Train the next generation of geoscientists through student-centered learning with industry partners
  • Acquire and preserve geological cores, samples and well data to be used in education and research now and for future generations
  • Establish and maintain academic and industry partnerships to research Michigan’s underground formations and develop test sites to evaluate and implement Geological Carbon Sequestration
  • Increase domestic oil and gas recovery through new technologies and field demonstration sites with industry partners
  • Develop classroom programs with backyard geology modules to motivate and education K-12 students
  • Implement professional and public outreach programs to explain the science behind and the benefits of technological advances in energy recovery and CO2 capture and storage

    Executive Summary

MGRRE is an important entity for the Department of Geosciences and Western Michigan University. The facility continues the original Michigan Basin Core Research Laboratory's mission of geological research and technology transfer about Michigan subsurface geology, efficient recovery of fossil fuels and carbon dioxide sequestration. It also includes geological research and education about water resources and environmental topics. The 27,000 square foot facility houses the most comprehensive archive of geological samples and data in the State of Michigan, including approximately 250,000 linear feet of rock cores obtained from oil and gas wells, environmental research wells, rotosonic cores of glacial sediments and samples from Lake Michigan bluff erosion studies and glacial research programs. There are also extensive web-based databases for information dissemination. The facility functions as a primary location for research and technology transfer related to petroleum geology, CO2 sequestration, Great Lakes bluff erosion and water resources. Educational activities include K-16 and post-graduate classroom training and public outreach in natural resources and environmental issues.
